  1. HyperSnap (formerly SnapShot/32) brings professional quality, 
  2. convenient Windows 95 and NT screen captures to your finger-tips.  
  3. It was designed for ease of use, with powerful and useful 
  4. features to aid the professional as well as support the needs of 
  5. the occasional user.  Use it just a few times - you'll find it to 
  6. be indispensable.

  8. HyperSnap (SnapShot/32) was selected by Siemens Nixdorf as a 
  9. standard software component distributed with their powerful 
  10. CELSIUS personal workstations! Read more about this in our help 
  11. file.

  13. Some of the more impressive features are listed here; this
  14. is but a partial list. Current users will want to see the list
  15. of new features in the Changes area at the end of this file.

  17. The best way to get to know HyperSnap is to simply use it!
  18.  
  19.   Save your image as a BMP, GIF, or JPEG file. GIFs can 
  20.   optionally be interlaced and include transparent backgrounds,
  21.   and HyperSnap can create progressive JPEGs, perfect for 
  22.   World Wide Web page use. Choose your color depth for BMP 
  23.   captures, too.
  24.  
  25.   Web and Help File Authors, don't miss what HyperSnap can 
  26.   do for you!
  27.  
  28.   -GIF images can be saved as interlaced files, with transparent 
  29.    backgrounds, and three levels of color reduction.
  30.  
  31.   -JPEGs have save options for a user-defined percentage of 
  32.    output quality, and the "fade-in" format.
  33.  
  34.   -The Quick Save feature is a lifesaver -- just keep on making 
  35.    those captures, without interruption. HyperSnap saves them 
  36.    each to an individual, sequentially named GIF or JPEG file, 
  37.    in the custom format you choose, for your later use.

  39.   -Include the cursor image in your Web Page or Help File image 
  40.    to better display your product shot or call attention to a 
  41.    specific item.

  43.   -The Window capture feature makes my day. The feature captures
  44.    whole windows and sections of windows that are automatically

  49.   -The built-in Crop feature is great for making final edits to 
  50.    your capture without transferring it to another program. And 
  51.    thankfully, there's an Undo Crop feature to mitigate the

  122. INSTALLATION
  123. ------------
  124.  
  125. Install this program by running the self-extracting archive,
  126. HySnap.exe (e.g. double click on its icon). You will be prompted
  127. for the target folder, where HyperSnap files will be installed.
  128. A HyperSnap group (menu) will be created in your Windows 95 Start
  129. menu, together with an "Uninstall" icon that will completely
  130. remove HyperSnap if necessary.
  131.  
  132. If the uninstall script file (UnHySnap.bat in your Windows 
  133. directory) was accidently deleted, you may still completely 
  134. uninstall HyperSnap by running: 
  135.  
  136.   snap32 -uninstall
  137.  
  138. and then deleting its files and directory manually. To recreate
  139. HyperSnap menu under Windows 95 "Start" button you may run
  140. again HySnap.exe, if you saved it, or just run:
  141.  
  142.   snap32 -install
  143.  
  144. and enter the same directory where HyperSnap is already 
  145. installed.
  146.  
  147. Register your copy of HyperSnap by selecting "Register" under the 
  148. program's Help menu, or from within the help menu.  This program 
  149. is a 'try before you buy' shareware program that relies on your 
  150. support for continued development, and single user registration 
  151. is only $20.00.  When you register HyperSnap you will receive a 
  152. code that enables additional features and become eligible for 
  153. priority support.  You will also be able to obtain free updates 
  154. of the program through our Web page (address below) with which 
  155. you can use your registration code, until the next major release.

  234. Fixed bug in Auto-Scroll: if Quick Save option was enabled
  235. together with Auto-Scroll, and you did Window Capture, HyperSnap
  236. would terminate with "Performed Illegal Operation" or a similar
  237. nasty message. Even if it did not crash, the auto-saved bitmap
  238. would not be the whole picture that was captured with scrolling,
  239. but only what was visible on the screen at the start of the
  240. capture. Now it auto-saves correctly even with auto-scroll on.

  244. Fix for capture in window mode: if you have a menu opened, and
  245. click on this menu, it would be executed in previous versions,

  332. you don't have to go outside of right and bottom edge of some
  333. object (by 1 pixel) to capture it whole. Also, previusly it was
  334. not possible to capture right and bottom 1 pixel edge of the
  335. screen in region mode, now it works.

  357. 1. The Snapshot menu was changed to "Capture".
  358. "Client" capture was eliminated and only "Window"
  359. item exists. As you move the cursor around the screen in this
  360. mode, you may observe different regions to be captured, as
  361. they are high-lighted by a blinking frame. Window's client
  362. area is captured by default, unless you go with the cursor to
  363. the window border or title.
  364.  
  365. 2. Added "Quick Print" with the check-mark 
  366. to the "Capture" menu. In addition I added there "Quick Save"
  367. and "Quick Copy" as well as "Include Cursor Image" and
  368. "Restore after Capture" options, also with check-marks.
  369. As you click on Capture menu, you have at a glance all the
  370. options, so you know what will happen.
  371.  
  372. 3. Region capture was enhanced - it now draws a big
  373. cross-hair for the first point selection, which allows more precise
  374. selection of the region's start point. Also keyboard is now active
  375. in Region mode:
  376.  
  377.   - Arrow keys - move the cross hair or the corner of the region
  378.     by one pixel, for very precise selection. In addition, Ctrl-Arrow
  379.     moves the cursor by 20 pixels, and Shift-Arrow by 5 pixels, if
  380.     you need to move faster without going back to the mouse.
  381.  
  382.   - Escape key will about the Region capture (same as right mouse
  383.     button click) and Enter key will finish it (accept the point), same
  384.     as left mouse button click.
  385.  
  386.   - Insert or plus (+) key will toggle the mouse cursor on and off.
  387.     Sometimes the cursor obscures the corner of your capture,
  388.     where you may want to be very precise.
  389.  
  390.   - If you are in the "Rectangle" mode (second step of the Region
  391.     command, when a rectangle is drawn on the screen, not the
  392.     cross-hair), you may press Tab or Insert keys to switch the
  393.     rectangle corner that you're dragging, e.g. from bottom right
  394.     to top left.
  395.  
  396.   - A help window is displayed on the screen in this mode,
  397.     explaining the keys. This window is moved around as you
  398.     move the cursor, trying to leave the region of interes 
  399.     unobscured.
  400.  
  401. 4. The "Quick Save" (or Auto Save) option was enhanced to
  402. save files in any supported format, not only in BMP. The way
  403. it works is also modified. You may turn off the file incrementing,
  404. so that each capture will overwrite the file with the same name
  405. (requested by several users). Also if you don't turn the timed
  406. auto captures on, the HyperSnap window will actually stay
  407. visible (will not disappear like in ver. 2.55). You may still use
  408. menu choices, in addition to hot keys, which previously was
  409. not possible. If you do not enter any file name in Quick Save
  410. dialog, you'll be prompted for a new file name each time you
  411. do a capture.
  412.  
  413. 5. Edit menu has "Copy Format" selection - to change the
  414. kind of bitmap that is copied to the clipboard. E.g. your screen
  415. may work in 65000+ color mode, but you want to paste into
  416. some document 16 color bitmaps (often used by Windows
  417. Help authors). You may set the format to be 16 color. 
  418. Previously they had to save the bitmap to a file to reduce
  419. colors. Requested by several users.
  420.  
  421. 6. Crop item added to Edit menu (to cut down the size of 
  422. your bitmap). Also requested by several users. Crop works
  423. in the same way as Capture/Region, except that it's limited
  424. to HyperSnap window. The same hot keys are active. 
  425. The position of the cursor, and size of the cropped area
  426. are displayed in the title bar as you move your mouse 
  427. or move the pointer with arrow keys.
  428.  
  429. 7. Added Undo Crop to Edit menu.
  430.  
  431. 8. HyperSnap title bar now displays the size of the pixmap
  432. in it's window. You may also press the left mouse button and
  433. move the mouse over the picture to read coordinates or your
  434. mouse pointer position. This feature may be useful when
  435. creating simple image maps for the WEB.

  437. 9. Modified Page Setup dialog, adding different picture
  438. scaling options.

  442. Margin settings for printing (and other printing parameters)
  443. were read from the registry only after calling File/Print,
  444. File/Print Setup... or File/Page Setup..., so if you used
  445. auto-print without going through the File menu, margins
  446. were always 0 and other page setup parameters had the
  447. default values. Fixed.

  461. background in GIF. The only remaining restriction is
  462. "snap with cursor image", which requires at least a temporary
  463. license from me to test. I also made auto-print and bitmap
  464. save options saved and restored from the registry between
  465. runs. Also auto-save now uses bitmap options setting from
  466. Save As... dialog for the format of bitmap it creates.

  469. Cosmetic changes: fixed focus for file dialogs - was not
  470. set until you clicked on any control. Fixed tab order for
  471. some dialogs and made 'A' a menu shortcut for Save As...

  475. Added JPEG read/write. Fixed GIF output to do dithering
  476. when reducing colors to 256 from hi-color modes (this is
  477. an option on File/Save As dialog). Changed Save dialogs
  478. from having separate menu functions for BMP and GIF to
  479. just one Save As... dialog. In capture window/client mode
  480. added a blinking frame that shows what will be captured
  481. as you move the mouse cursor around.
  482. Other new features - drag and drop BMP, GIF or JPG file from
  483. file manager or Win95 folder to SnapShot/32 window to open and
  484. view it, or start Snap32 with a command line argument to open
  485. that particular file.
  486. Added "Snapshot Options..." item under "Options..." menu.
  487. You can set there "Auto Print" and "Auto Copy" actions
  488. that are taken right after a snapshot is done. The image
  489. will be printed on the default printer and/or copied to
  490. the Windows clipboard. You may also turn off the "Auto
  491. Restore" feature and keep SnapShot/32 window minimized
  492. (in Windows 95 taskbar) after each snapshot.
  493. Added keyboard shortcut keys for Edit/Copy (Ctrl-C), Paste 
  494. (Ctrl-V) and Clear (Ctrl-X) functions.  Also added "Options" 
  495. to Save in BMP format, that allows to select bitmap type (1, 
  496. 4, 8 or 24 bits per pixel).  
  497. Fixed many bugs.

  499. Ver. 2.44, released 1995.09.20
  500. Fixed two small bugs: in Save GIF, if you did not type
  501. the extension, it used to be BMP, not GIF. Also on the
  502. same dialog the word "Transparent" was misspelled.

  510. Fixed some small problems in color palette when capturing
  511. images from palette intensive applications. Also upgraded

  515. Fixed a license number problem for long names (over 30
  516. characters). Also moved registry entries for window
  517. position, print setup and hot keys to HKEY_CURRENT_USER
  518. tree, so that each user on a machine could have her/his own
  519. settings saved.

  522. Fixed the printing bug under Windows 95 (it would not print
  523. at all), introduced since ver. 2.34.
  524. Changed the way license numbers are generated. Until now the
  525. numbers were based on the name of the machine, where the
  526. program was running. Now they are based on the name of the
  527. owner, so that people could use SnapShot/32 on several
  528. machines. Still the "single user license" number must be
  529. entered separately on each machine, but since it is tied to
  530. the owner name, one can install it e.g. on her/his desktop
  531. and laptop computer independently. The name of the owner
  532. appears in the "Help/About" box. People who registered
  533. earlier and have licenses based on machine names can upgrade
  534. to a "single user license" at no cost by sending me an email
  535. message or a letter containing their machine name and old
  536. license number. The old licenses will still work.

  538. Ver. 2.34, released 1995.07.30
  539. Bug fix: SnapShot/32 saves its position and window size on
  540. exit, and when restarted, its window is positioned as
  541. before.  This created problem when the saved position was
  542. completely off-screen so the window was not visible.  Fixed
  543. by checking for any corner of SnapShot/32 window being off-
  544. screen, and if so - repositioning the window to the center
  545. of the screen.  Also modified the message that appears if
  546. SnapShot/32 can not register its hot keys, e.g.  due to
  547. another program (sometimes another copy of SnapShot/32)
  548. using them.  This message is less cryptic now, explains the
  549. reason and suggests changing the keys with "Configure Hot
  550. Keys" dialog under "Options" menu. Also fixed: "Enable hot
  551. keys" check box in hot keys setup dialog was not doing
  552. anything.

  555. Added ability to read GIF files, but only in registered
  556. version. You may read-in GIF file to view it, print it,

  571. mode were black and white only. Worked around this bug by
  572. forcing 16 colors always if less colors are reported.
